January 23rd, 1988: They Might Be Giants

This show was the day after the Exploited. The following is a partial transcript of an interview with They Might Be Giants from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” from 2001, where they discuss City Gardens.

John Flansburgh (They Might Be Giants): We pull up in our nice, brand-new Ford Econoline van, and we pull up to a loading area, in a place that looks like one giant loading area. And there is another van that 254 no slam dancing, no stage diving, no spikes looks like it has been flipped upside down and set on fire, and the fire was just recently extinguished.

Jon Stewart: Let me explain this. We used to have to run from the club to our cars, and we needed cover.

John Flansburgh: The PA was chained to the stage.

Jon Stewart: Someone actually tried to light a fire inside the club. Remember that band the Butthole Surfers?
