Circle Jerks/Agnostic Front – September 27, 1986

Jim Norton: After the shows, Randy used to go either to Denny’s in Bordentown or to a truck stop called The Iron Skillet. There’d be maybe four or five people who went. I remember one night being at some restaurant, and I think it was just me and him, after a Circle Jerks show. The Circle Jerks drew about 650 people or something like that. I said, naively, “Well, 650 people at ten dollars or twelve dollars, I guess you had a pretty good night.” And he broke it all down for me. What each of the bands got paid, what he paid to the club… you know, a lot of people thought he owned the club. He didn’t. He paid rent for each show. Then you’ve got each of the bands. You’ve got security, the sound guy, the lighting guy, the DJ, the posters and the punkcards, and the advertising, and the insurance. I’m like, “Wait a minute. This guy, who I, not long ago, thought was the ultimate parasite gorging on the fertile flesh of the punk rock community, walked out of the show with something like $500 for all of his hassles and hard work.” I realized very quickly he was not a multimillionaire. He was not living in a huge castle someplace. Not doing shows, not at this scale.
